For the past 300 years, microbiologists have been extensively studying microorganisms and trying to figure out why they act like the way they do. After the invention of microscope microbiology has paced up and we see the results in fields like agriculture, biology, genetics, medicine and engineering. Microbiology changed how man thought after it was discovered that tiny living organisms can affect our lives so much and it will continue to help us get more advanced and better prepared.
One of the major advantages of microbiology is that it has helped the researchers in finding treatments and cures of diseases that are deadly. It is true that these living organisms cause a lot of diseases themselves but no one can challenge their benefits - they have been proved valuable time and again. Taking for an example, Corynebacterium diphtheria - it is a bacterium that causes respiratory infections in humans and could prove fatal. However, it also possesses anti-tumour capabilities to treat different types of cancer.
Discovered by Bacteriologists Edwin Klebs and Friedrich Loffler, the bacterium produces toxins due to presence of a certain gene. It multiplies in numbers in the human body and secretes diphtheria which is toxic in nature and causes cancer. Individuals affected by the bacteria have definite symptoms like sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, difficulty in breathing, etc. Since it is poisonous for the humans, urgency of administrating vaccines and antibiotics could not be stressed upon more. The moment it is confirmed, the doctor starts with an injection of getting antitoxic in the muscle or vein. It is then followed up by antibiotics to help the infection go away.
Like it was mentioned before that the microorganisms also have two sides to its coin - it is as dangerous as favourable. Now that we know about this organism, we can find cure to the infection and even use it as a medicine for other diseases. Studying the nature of these tiny living beings lets us know our surroundings better. This branch of science is evolving at a great speed and changing with the course of time. With different segments of microbiology dealing with varied sectors - food, air, medical and water, everyone is looking to find answers to make it better and healthier for the people. No one would have thought of microscope or even tiny organisms 300 years ago but today they are making a huge difference in our world. Hopefully, preventions and cure for some more deadly diseases would be discovered by the microbiologists and these would be utilized for their true worth.
